Sweeney & Todd
10 Castle Street (0118 958 6466)
Sweeney & Todd’s isn’t officially
a pub as such but a pie shop come alehouse that is certainly
a popular watering hole. The pies served here are both
generously sized and delicious and the perfect accompaniment
to the real ales available.
Fisherman’s Cottage 224 Kennetside (0118 9571553)
This Fuller’s owned put has a great
canal side location that makes it especially popular with
those enjoying a stroll along the water’s edge and looking
for a pleasant place to rest a while. On a sunny day the
conservatory area and the garden are particularly sought
after.
Dove 119 Orts Road (0118 935
2556)
The Dove has a local reputation for its
live music and so on Wednesday nights you’ll find a live
jazz or blues band playing. At other times you can keep
yourselves entertained with the help of their pool table or
darts board.
Retreat 8 St John’s Street (0118 957 1597)
The retreat is aptly named as its loyal
regulars see it as just that. Here they can retreat from the
outside world and simply enjoy a quiet pint or two of their
real ales on tap in the cosy snug bar, whilst less familiar
faces tend to feel more at home in the large rear bar
complete with pool table and darts board.
Back Of Beyond 108 Kings Road (0118 959 5906)
The Back Of Beyond is Reading’s resident
Wetherspoon pub and as such you will find a good selection
of beers, wines and spirits and a lively crowd. The pub also
benefits from overlooking the canal making it especially
popular in the summer.
