Reading attractions, local Reading attractions, Berkshire England

On the outskirts of Reading, in the Lower Basildon area, is a very special 400 acres span of idyllic parkland known as Beale Park. The park was originally established by Gilbert Beale, who with his great love of wildlife, turned the area into a haven for exotic birds. Today you can see a wonderful array of flamingos, owls and parrots to name but a few. The grounds are also the ideal place for a picnic after which you can explore the: narrow gauge railway, rare breed farm animals, take a boat trip, a natural trail or visit the adventure playground.

Built in the 1770’s Basildon Park was originally owned by Francis Sykes with the money he had made in India. The house did however suffer from an era of neglect but has now been fully restored thanks to the work of Lord and Lady Iliffe and the National Trust. Visitors are now welcome to tour the house with its elegant staircase and numerous works of art, as well as the extensive grounds where walks in the park, garden and nearby woodland are highly popular.

One of the most scenic ways to explore the Reading area is from the water and thanks to Kennet Cruises that is very easy to do. They charter cruises from town centre locations out along the Kennet & Avon Canal as well as the River Thames. You can either join in a chartered cruise for hire you own boat for the day and please yourselves, the choice is yours.

The Museum of Reading houses an interesting collection of historical items dating back to Saxon life in and around the area. There is plenty of information explaining the objects on display that give a fascinating insight into the lives of our ancestors. The highlight of the exhibits though has to be the full size replica of the amazing Bayeux Tapestry that’s an absolute must see.

The Oracle is located in the centre of Reading and offers great shopping and entertainment for all the family. You’ll discover around 90 shops including most of the popular high street names alongside a vast choice of coffee shops, bars and restaurants. There’s also a Warner Village cinema, crèche and even an art gallery.
